This set of Middlemarch Vol I&II hardcover books by George Eliot was published by Harper Brothers, Publishers in 1872.  They have green cloth boards with a facsimile signature on each cover in gilt along with gilt titles on the spines. There is a name written in pencil on the title page. Pages show spotting, and the hinge is cracked at the front of Volume I.

The variety of Middlemarch's characters and conflicts gives readers a thorough view of social issues in the early nineteenth century, many of which continue to be relevant to today's society. Most characters  marry for love rather than obligation, yet marriage still appears negative and unromantic. Marriage and the pursuit of it are central concerns in the novel, but unlike in many novels of the time, marriage is not considered the ultimate source of happiness. Written from a feminist perspective, George Eliot is the pen name of Mary Ann Evans. Middlemarch remains one of the greatest works of English literature.
